Qatar=Cornell, UAE=Harvard, Saudi=Hopkins, Bahrain=RCSI, Kuwait=Nothing

As I was browsing through medical news today, the headline 'Leading Ophthalmological Centres In The United States and Saudi Arabia Announce Affiliation' caught my eye. Apparently, the Wilmer Eye Institue of John Hopkins (which has held the top spot in USNews' annual hospital ranking since 1990) will be collaborating with King Khaled Specialist Eye Hospital in Riyadh in the following areas: patient care, education and research. How come every country in the Gulf, except Kuwait, is setting up international medical collaborations? Qatar has an Ivy League medical school, Dubai has Harvard Research Foundation, plus Tawam Hospital has a John Hopkins affiliation and even Bahrain has the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. We got zip!

The opportunities such collaborations would open up for patients and doctors are invaluable. Does anyone know why we are so behind?

  3. It is not about "el fatawey". If thats the problem saudi arabia must be behind us in the medical field. it is all about us . Do we want to change ourselves? I know things are depressing in kuwait but we have to do something.

  4. i agree with anonymous, ya3ni fatawi/stuff like that is just an obstacle, bs it rlly does come down to the ppl oo how much they want to work to accomplish stuff like that

    bs ana a7is its not even about getting a world renowned uni in q8, ya3ni to me sh7aga aru7 cornell, qatar, if i can go to the real thing in the US. its just trying to improve what we have by either making the medical school climb bll rankings or making a new medical school that gets to be rlly high in rankings.. one can only dream i guess .. and ya i dont think kuwait will rise again one day :P

  5. Well, I think having a world class medical school would help because the curriculum is more well rounded. It's not just about how many medical facts you can jam in your brain but about learning about leadership, teamwork and community service (although to be fair I don't know enough about Kuwait University to make that judgement). Also, I don't think getting into Cornell is that easy so by having it locally it is more accessible. Having the best hospitals in the world collaborate with local hospital would definitely push standards higher. I think there's a lot that can be learnt and an international team would find it easier to implement changes as nepotism etc. would not play a factor, as it would with local administration. From what I understand, do you think that people in q8 don't want change enough for it to happen?

  6. It would be certainly worthwhile to have a world class medical school in Kuwait. I think that would be worth more than all the scholarships Kuwait currently offers. As Sarah mentioned, with Medicine you need to know about Leadership, teamwork and how to work within the community. For students who are studying Medicine abroad their factual knowledge might be sound but their ability to work with Kuwaiti patients will be beneath their colleagues who studied in Kuwait.
    To the poster who said they could go to the real thing in the States, I say "unlikely". Getting into an American Medical school as a foreigner is an impossible task. Unless you have citizenship or a green card then it's not even worth attempting, you'll waste 4 years of your life doing a degree that registers as "pre-med".

    That being said I don't think that will happen in Kuwait. The steady decline of the level of healthcare provided in the country is merely a symptom of the illness that the whole country suffers. A culture of depression, disdain and lack of initiative.

  7. Salam,

    I think the ministry has just realised that there is something called collaboration between well known organisations to help upcoming health care systems to benefit from what is truly decades of experience that out-numbers the history of healthcare in the gulf.

    In this regards, they are following the footsteps of Dubai, in collaborating with John Hopkins, but mainly for the management of the hospital as is the case there.

    I wonder whether this is a true teamwork effort or only a fake costume to stay in touch with the recent medical fashion make-over in the GULF
